Lesson 17 (4th Feb)

The objectives for this lesson are;
  • To develop aural perception skills through a range of exercises based upon the tonalities, structure, melodies and rhythms of music from the 1950's and 1960's.
  • To consider the construction of the 1950's chapter of your Rockumentary, demonstrating a solid understanding of the development of music throughout this decade.
  • To rehearse the two 'historic' pieces chosen so far, paying particular attention to the recreation of authentic sounds, timbres & textures.

We will spend lesson 3 completing the various aural perception exercises. This will include recreating melodies, identifying chords and chord sequences and identifying keys; all by ear with no notation.

During lesson 4 we will discuss the Rockumentary assignment. The resource used during previous lessons will be posted on a new page on the blog (Research Sources). Obviously, you can use this as one source of information, but it is up to you to gather more information and to select the relevant key events/artists. Rockumentaries based only on the information I provide will not achieve anything higher than a pass! You will need to identify songs that you wish to include in your Rockumentary (as part of the soundtrack; perhaps at low volume under your narration). When you have identified the songs you wish to include, email me with the artists and song title and I will make a copy which can be imported into the video editing software. You will also need photographs/images for use in your film (nobody wants to look at a blank screen!).

Lessons 5 will be devoted to the rehearsal of the selected material from the 1950's and 1960's. Remember, Kev will lead the rehearsal of the 1950's choice and Lee is responsible for leading the rehearsal of the 1960's song.

Homework;
  • Rehearse your individual parts of the ensemble performance materials.
  • Add to the information you currently have about music from the 1950's and 1960's.
  • Redo your 'distinction answers' (unit 40) so that it reads like a report (not a Q&A sheet).
