You will complete a test on;
- Key Signatures (up to 5 sharps or 5 flats)
- Major Scale construction
- Minor Scale construction (natural & harmonic)
- Relative majors & minors
- Chords in a major scale
- Chords in a minor scale
You must achieve at least 75% to pass. If you do not pass, you will have to retake a similar test at a time that is convenient to me (and I am in school next Saturday & Sunday - LOL). Don't panic, just consider scale construction logically and learn the key signatures in the same way that you would try to learn any other list of items (maybe repeating the list out loud or writing it out several times). Perhaps, get a friend or parent to test you. Here is an accurate version of the list;
Sharps
C Major (0) and the 5th note of C major is...
G Major (1) - F# and the 5th note of G major is...
D Major (2) - F# C# and the 5th note of D major is...
A Major (3) - F# C# G# and the 5th note of A major is...
E Major (4) - F# C# G# D# and the 5th note of E major is...
B Major (5) - F# C# G# D# A#
Flats
C Major (0) and C is the 5th note of...
F Major (1) - Bb and F is the 5th note of...
Bb Major (2) - Bb Eb and Bb is the 5th note of...
Eb Major (3) - Bb Eb Ab and Eb is the 5th note of...
Ab Major (4) - Bb Eb Ab Db and Ab is the 5th note of...
Db Major (5) - Bb Eb Ab Db Gb
Notice the subtle difference between majors & minors; with majors you say 'and the 5th note is' (to identify the next key) and for minors you say 'is the 5th note of'. Why not use a mnemonic to help you remember the order of sharps or flats in a key signature? For example, (sharps) Father Christmas Grows Daffodils Annually or (for flats) Big Elephants Aren't Dangerous Generally. Why not make up your own? Also, look at the last flat you add to the key signature each time; what is the relationship with the next key? They are the same letter! Wow! There are many patterns and ways to learn these lists. Do whatever you have to do to remember them!
Lesson 11(2)
In this part of the lesson you will complete your 'Good Riddance' score; export your Logic MIDI file of the melody and import it into Sibelius, touch it up and add other elements including the chord symbols identified in previous lessons.
Homework;
- Complete the Good Riddance score to your full satisfaction.
- Email me a pdf version of the score to the usual address.
Finally, a pat on the back to anyone who reminds me to look at the 'Yesterday' melody scores prepared for homework last week (thanks Erica for emailing yours).
Reminder : Intervals in major. minor & diminished triads.
