- To investigate MIDI. What is it? What can it do? What can't it do?
- To investigate a MIDI sequencer application. How do you record and playback MIDI information?
- To examine the various types of MIDI editor available in sequencer packages.
- To edit MIDI information using a piano roll editor (correcting pitches, rhythms & durations).
- To transfer MIDI information between the sequencer software and our notation software so that you can accurately engrave a score of the MIDI track.
Our recording package, Logic Pro, allows you to record audio & MIDI tracks. You've probably done this many times without really considering what MIDI is and how you can edit it to make the track more accurate (other than quantising your track). We will set up a MIDI recording system, record some MIDI information and briefly explore the various methods that can be used to present and edit this information. Then, in more detail, we are going to examine the piano roll editor. I will model how to use the piano roll editor to change pitches, rhythms and note durations. Then, using the piano roll editor and the Sibelius notation package, you are going to complete the following 7 tasks;
- Use the draw tool to 'draw' the melody & rhythm for Twinkle Twinkle Little Star (Start on a D).
- Have your work signed off by me before continuing to task 3.
- Import the file below and 'correct' the guitar part so that the notes are legato, not staccato.
- Correct the cello part so that it is also more legato.
- Correct any 'wrong' notes in the melody part (I'm talking pitch & durations).
- Export the melody region only as a MIDI file and import into Sibelius.
- Touch up the melody score in Sibelius, add any other score elements that you think are necessary and export the completed score as a pdf. Email to the usual address.
Here is the file that you will need for tasks 3-7;
