Lesson 1

The objectives for this lesson are;
  • To become familiar with the structure of the BTEC course.
  • To introduce the online support.
  • To introduce Assignment 1 (The Elements of Music Scores) of unit 41 (Working With Notation Packages)
  • To establish differences between 'identify', 'explain' & 'appraise' (Pass/Merit/Distinction)

In this lesson, you will be introduced to the first assignment (see the assignment brief on the documents page). The differences between a mechanical performance and a musical one which uses Rubato (expressive rhythmic timing) will be demonstrated using a Chopin Prelude as an example. You will be asked to consider how a musical score represents the nuances of expressive performance. A list of score elements which need to be examined will be shared (see assignment brief for full list). The score elements will be examined within the context of the scores of the Queen hit 'Bohemian Rhapsody' & Chopin's 'Prelude in E minor' (see document page for score).

Homework;
  • Use the link to the online musical dictionary to define each of the terms in the score elements list.
  • Having defined the term, attempt to identify the element within the 'Bohemian Rhapsody' score (you can note the bar number in which it appears).
  • If you can't find the element in 'Bohemian Rhapsody', use the score of a different piece of music (perhaps using the link to free scores). Remember to bring the score to next lesson!
  • Split your elements definition list into two categories; 1) Elements that you have defined, understand and can locate in the score & 2) Elements that you have defined but can't find in the score because you don't understand the definition.

Next lesson you will;
  • Translate tricky definitions into plain English so that you can locate the element in the score.
  • Learn how to record a screen-cast using Quicktime Pro.
  • Write the script for your screen-cast, focussing on the 'identification', 'explanation' & 'appraisal' of the score elements from the list.
  • Be introduced to 'Sibelius'; the industry standard music notation package.

      UPDATE : I have now added the Chopin 'Prelude in E minor' to the Documents Page!

      UPDATE : I have now added an 'Audio Examples' page where you can listen to music. Both Queen's 'Bohemian Rhapsody' & Chopin's 'Prelude in E minor' are now there. Listen to them and compare the performance to the score.
